Historically accorded in recognition that the diplomat represents (and is responsible to) a different sovereignty; also in order that the legitimate pursuit of his official duties will not be impeded in any unnecessary way. مزایا و مصئونیت های دیپلماتیک که سیر تاریخی دارد و مطابق آن دیپلمات به عنوان نماینده (و مسئول در برابر) یک کشور مستقل با حاکمیت ملی شناخته می شود؛ وی در انجام کار های قانونی و رسمی خود نباید با موانعی غیر ضروری برخورد کند. این امتیازات شامل مصئونیت شخص دیپلمات و محل اقامت او از هر نوع تعرض، معافیت وی از پرداخت مالیات، و در امان بودن وی از قرار گرفتن تحت پیگرد قانونی توسط محاکم کشور میزبان می باشد.
